Mid-Term Reflective Letter
It’s unbelievable how much I learned so far this semester. At first I just thought that this class would be like any other literature class that I’ve had in the past. But within the first week I realized how wrong that thought was. Because of this class I got my love of reading back, learned more about hero’s, archetypes, and writing poetry.
When I first looked over the syllabus over Christmas break I thought how in the world am I going to read seven novels in one semester. Now, here we are half way through the semester and I’ve read four of the novels, I’ve always been someone who loves to read. But this year being my first year in college I had to put my love for reading aside, I started to hate reading, because I wasn’t reading books I liked to or wanted to read. Most of my classes give so much required reading in the text books that I didn’t have time to read novels. This class on the other hand helped me with that, yes the reading is required, but at least in this class its novels that I like to read.
Last semester in my College Writing class we talked a little about hero’s. In that class we just addressed a hero the way people typically think of them, as a super hero. Before that class I had thought that a hero could be someone who didn’t have super natural powers, but after taking that class I wasn’t so sure anymore. This class really helped to clear that up for me and show me that everyone in their own way is some sort of hero.
Before I took this class I didn’t really know anything about the hero’s journey or archetypes. Learning about the steps taken through out a hero’s journey was very interesting for me. In a way I could relate these steps to things that have happened in my own journey, which I realized this year as a some what heroic journey. I would have never guessed that I was taking my own heroic journey, without this class. The different archetypes really interested me. Its neat to try to figure out what archetype each person is, but what I’ve come to see from this class is that everyone at some point in their lives goes through most of the different archetypes.
Another thing that I really like about this class, that I really didn’t think I would ever like, is us writing poetry. Never in my life did I think that I would be able to sit down and write a poem. This class proved that thought wrong, writing poetry has become easy for me because of this class. When I talk to friends and family from home and they ask what I’m doing in my classes, and I tell them that I have to write poetry. They all kind of laugh, and are like you writing poetry, because I just never thought that would be something I could do. Thanks to this class I proved to myself and friends that I can.
I can’t wait to see how much more I will be learning in the second half of this semester. This class has taught me so much already that I will be able to use for the rest of my life. I admit that most of the things we talk about in class I wont be able to use in my classroom, when I become a Family and Consumer Science teacher, but you never know what will happen. The skills I learned in this class are always ones that are good to have. Thanks to this class so far, I’ve got my love of reading back, learned more about hero’s, archetypes, and that I can write poetry.
